Emergency Dentistry Q & A

What are the most common dental emergencies?

Like any other area of your health, your dental health sometimes requires emergency care, especially for the following:

  • A tooth that’s been knocked out
  • A severe crack in your tooth
  • A filling that’s fallen out
  • An abscess in your tooth
  • Moderate to severe tooth pain
  • Inflamed and bleeding gums

The above represent some of the more common reasons why patients at Grace Dental Group seek emergency care at the practice, but anytime you’re in pain, you should seek immediate help.

What should I do if my tooth is knocked out?

While your teeth are designed to last a lifetime, accidents happen and you may lose a tooth due to trauma. Should this happen to you or a loved one, your first steps are important as you may be able to save your tooth. These steps include:

  • Locating the missing tooth and rinsing it with warm water (holding it by the crown only)
  • Placing the missing tooth back into the socket
  • Holding the tooth in place by biting down on a piece of gauze or a tea bag
  • Calling Grace Dental Group as soon as you’re able

If your tooth doesn’t readily fit back into the socket, keep the tooth in a glass of milk or tucked inside your cheek until you see one of the dentists at Grace Dental Group.

Should you crack your tooth, try to stabilize the area by gently biting down on something soft and call Grace Dental Group as soon as possible.

What should I do for tooth pain?

If you experience moderate to severe tooth pain, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers and use warm or cold compresses on the area for added relief. While these steps should make you more comfortable, it’s important that you make an appointment at Grace Dental Group. Tooth pain is often a sign of a more significant problem, such as an infection in your pulp or a nerve that’s been exposed because of tooth decay.

More often than not, the dentists at Grace Dental Group can quickly remedy your problem, and your pain, in one appointment.

If you have a dental emergency or you’re simply on the fence about whether you need to see a dentist, call Grace Dental Group for guidance or a same-day appointment.
